SEPM 12.1 Inetpub\Content

I need a solution

I am seeing the InetPub/Content folder climb to over 20GB.  Is this normal given my configuration?  (Below)

I have reviewed http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH104845

I am running Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 12.1.1101.401 (RU1 MP1).  My database is stored on an external SQL Servers.  This is a multi-site/multi-SEPM environment.  Presently two sites (expected to grow to at least 3, possibly more) and two SEPM's per site.  This configuration is servicing a multi-domain international company.

My site live update settings are configured to retain 30 content revisions.  I have about 3200 clients on the SEPM today, but that is expected to grow to about 18,000 when I am finished with the rollout to all of my clients. I am storing content unzipped to provide better network performance for upgrades.  I am downloading content daily for Windows 32-bit and Windows 64-bit platforms, and I am selecting product updates and signatures for client updates, virus and spyware definitions, SONAR heuristic signatures, TruScan proactive threat scan commercial applications list, intrustion prevention signatures, submission control signatures and reputation signatures.  All content is downloaded in English only.

Some clients obtain virus definitions directly from the SEPM, but most will obtain them from GUPs.  A typical GUP configuration in my environment consists of a Windows 2008 Server or Windows 7 Professional system and is configured for a maximum cache size of 3GB and will delete content updates if unused at 30 days.

My questions are...

  1. Under normal operating conditions, how much data should I expect to see in the InetPub/Content folder with the above listed configuration?
  2. Is it safe to manually delete some or all of this data to free up space (particuarly when the disk is full) or is there a cleanup utility to assist with this?
  3. If I lower the number of content revisions, but set my GUPs to retain 30 days worth of revisions, will that mitigate the SEPM disk space issue?

Thank you for your assistance.

Dave Wright
