My operating system is Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (Build 10240).
When attempting to upgrade to Windows 10 Build 10586 and encountered an error, I was advised by Microsoft to disable or "preferably uninstall" my anti-virus software and try again. After multiple failed attempts, I decided today to follow their more extreme advice, and uninstalled SEP. Unfortunately the Windows 10 upgrade failed nonetheless, and now I face a new problem -- I cannot re-install SEP again. When I run the installation package supplied by my institution: SEP_Win_12.1.6318-64bit.exe, which I also used to install SEP for the first time, I now immediately get an error message:
"An error prevents this program from continuing:
Couldn't create output directory. Cannot create a file when that file already exists."
This message pops up immediately after I double-click on the executable, so it seems that a simple solution of deleting some relic files from the previous installation could solve this problem, but I cannot find any such files. The log file from my previous installation, SEP_INST.LOG, does still exist in \\AppData\Local\Temp\, but deleting it doesn't help with the issue above. The log file's content also indicates that setup files were extracted to \\AppData\Local\Temp\Symantec\, but that folder no longer exists. Furthermore, I have also checked the location where SEP was first installed (in C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec), but that folder is gone as well.
(In addition, I also tried moving the installation package to different locations before running, but the same behavior is observed, so it's unlikely to have been caused by a problematic file directory.)
This situation has put me at my wit's end, and that's why I have come to the forum for help. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
