SEP12.X GUP Question

I need a solution

Since any computer with the SEP client installed can serve as a GUP, once it has been elevated to that role and configured, does the computer have to be logged into our domain or just turned on to be able to function as our GUP?  It doesn't have to be logged in to get an IP address, but how do the services start unless Windows 7 has loaded a user profile, which doesn't happen until the computer is logged into the domain? My apologies for such a simple question, but it came up in discussion.  Thanks in advance for any replies and comments!
